Nutty Science

Did any of you notice that your squirrel population and your acorn count increased at almost the same rate? Why do you think that is? What do you think will happen to the squirrel population here in Fairview Park over the next winter/ spring with the large number of acorns that are being produced this fall? Why do you think that? What other things did you notice when you added squirrels or hawks to the simulation?
I have lots of squirrels in my backyard. How many acorns will each of them eat? What other animals have you seen eating acorns?
Are you a squirrel expert?

Yeah, Mrs.Baldi pointed that out to me. I think that the squirrels died off until the trees were able to support the squirrels that survived. The squirrels here will probably have plenty of food burrowed under the ground to last them until next fall. Most of the squirrels that wont survive through the winter are probably already dead from the bigger squirrels taking the acorns and they bury the acorns under the ground so they have food for later. The hawks just kept increasing until there were no more squirrels then they finally died off. The squirrels will probably eat about 30 acorns a day depending on how many there are. I've seen birds eating acorns.Haha no im definitally not a squirrel expert.

Yeah, Pat had pointed that out to me. We were partners. We had used different amounts and I had figured out how to keep them alive.

No, actually i didn't notice this until i did some research. i did know that the squirrels would die if they didn't have enough to eat. After all it is common sense. No, to be perfectly honest, i think that our squirrels will never run out of food. you'll always need more squirrels than hawks, because the hawks need to eat. (Again Common Sense)plenty of acorns will be eaten by the squirrels, several hundred total. I've personally seen only squirrels eating acorns.

No i didnt notice that they increased at the same time. I think the squirrels will have a lot to eat and will probably reproduce more, with all the acorns that are being produced. When i added the hawks iI noticed that you had to bring them in at a certain year because there would be enough squirrels to eat when i brought them in later. They will each eat a lot. I havent seen any other animals eat the acorns.

Squirrels are evil creatures, they cause more dammage then all other rodents except racoons they detstroy yards to store food especcially to yards. ^^

Yeah, u pointed that out to me in the computer lab last week!:D I thought it was pretty interesting. if the acorn population was the same as what i set as, then there would be millions of squirrels. But when i added hawks, the squirrels decreased. Then, the squirrels were at the same population level. The squirrels will probably eat about 30 or so acorns per day. Well, depending how many there are. i haven't seen any other animal eat as much acorns as the squirrel yet, but thanks to u, i've seen mealworms eat acorns. that was a fun lab too. i wouldn't call myself an expert but i guess u could say that i know alittle. well, i know more about squirrels since our experiment/lab.

yeah i found away to keep my squirls and hawks alive :) I don't think any squirrels will survive over the winter because of all the snow covering their food. And I personial don't think they will be abel to find it LOL

Yeah i noticed that. I think it is because the more acorns on the ground, the better the squirrels will thrive in the forest. Because they have more food, less will die and the population grows. If you add hawks, you should add them late so the squireel population can have lots of room to stabilize.
They most likely survive within trees-they hibernate-and when they come out of hibernation, they find the nuts they have buried around the sleeping site-and as to the "squirell expert question-maybe......

We noticed that our squirrel population and acorn count increased at almost the same rate because, the amount of acorns the tree had that year. The squirrel population will raise because of the amount of acorns produced. We noticed that the more squirrels we added the more hawks there were. We think they will eat 25 a day.We haven't seen any other animals eat the acorns. no, we are not squirrel experts.

deanna and amelia think that the squirel population is dying ut b/c of the lack of acorn production.
